“You have them, too,” Venda said, softly while tears welled in her pain-darkened eyes. “Your enemy left his mark on you, too.”

Again... it shot down his spine. At that moment, he realized she understood. Naked. No coverings. No feigning. She stripped through his PK-hardened carapace and saw his loss without actually knowing what had happened in his past. And what of her pain?

Despite survival techniques and strategic battle plans, Valden swore within himself that he could die a fulfilled man right where he was. She was with him, arching her back as he traced light impressions over her stomach... and this mind-frelled him.

Gently, his lips passed over the taut skin of stomach, and he smiled as she drew a sharp, ragged breath in response. His lips continued their journey, but instead of finding more smooth warm skin, he encountered something strange. Something out of place.
